Is the Ozone Layer Really Depleting?

The ozone layer is a layer located in the lower part of the stratosphere that protects the earth from the ultra violet rays of the sun. It acts as a shield and absorber of harmful substances that emits from the sun which are dangerous to mankind. If the ozone layer depletes, it means that the amount of ozone in the stratosphere has reduced drastically and this is usually caused by certain human activities. Over time, there have been a lot of misconceptions as regards if the ozone layer is really depleting. And a lot of research and experiments have been conducted to ascertain if this was indeed true. Some scientists are of the opinion that it is depleting while some have doubts and reservations about it. Amidst all these, what can really be said to be the real truth about the state of the ozone layer? We discovered from our findings that the ozone layer is really depleting. Here are some reasons we think so:

  • The earth’s protective layer is thinning: The thinning of the protective layer of the earth was as a result of substances made by humans which were causing harm to the atmosphere. Some of them are vehicle emissions such as exhaust gas, by-products from industrial companies like ash from fuel combustion. Others are aerosols like fog, dust, smoke and steam which all lead to air pollution. Although in 2013, discovery news ascertained that the earth’s protective layer would be fully restored by 2045. And according to a journal published in 2015, some scientists discovered that the ozone layer had already started to improve.
  • Presence of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere: They are made up of atoms like carbon, chlorine and fluorine and are used as coolants in air conditioners and refrigerators. These are chemicals used in the manufacturing of the toxic substances that make the ozone layer deplete. This subsequently leads to the abundance of chlorine in the atmosphere, a substance which mixes with ultra violet rays to cause depletion.
  • Presence of substances that affect the ozone layer: Some substances actually affect the ozone layer when they are in the atmosphere. They are Methyl Chloroform, Carbon Tetrachloride, Chlorofluorocarbons and halons. They are used in industries and are harmful to the ozone layer.
  • Increase in skin diseases: As a result of the depletion of the ozone layer, there is a high increase in the ultra violet rays which emit from the sun on earth. And when the skin is exposed to this radiation, it leads to skin cancer, sunburn, cataracts in the eyes and aging of the skin.

Bottom Line

The reasons why the ozone layer is depleting cannot be over emphasized and we believe that from the few reasons listed above, it is evident that the ozone layer is really depleting. It is our strong belief that the doubts on the minds of scientists and scholars who thought otherwise have now been cleared.
